Chapter Nine

KIERAN

“It’s not that bad,” Skye assures me as he strips the wet bedlinens while I try to soak some of the water from the carpet with a towel. It’s absolutely soaked, and I want to prevent having more seep through to the ceiling below if possible. A paint job is one thing, but I’d like to avoid having to replaster.

“It’s really not,” Josh adds, “but I don’t think buckets are going to do the trick here. The drips are too spread out. A plastic tarp might be a better bet, now that they’ve slowed down.”

“I think you’re right.” I sit back on my haunches and study the sopping wet carpet. “We’re going to need to rip up this carpet too.”

“Not tonight,” Skye says. “Call the insurance company tomorrow and get them out to look first.” He hesitates. “The mattresses are wet.”

I close my eyes. Of course they are. “How wet? Dry in a few hours wet, or future health hazard wet?”

“Somewhere in between. I say check them again tomorrow and see if they’re still damp or not. But you won’t be able to sleep on them tonight.”

The sound of footsteps overhead makes us all tip our heads back. Daniel and Ewan are up there, checking to see what the problem is. I tried to convince them to wait until morning, but they swayed me with the reminder that it might rain again. Fortunately, one of the gables in the storage room has a small door built in to give them access to the roof. It was done as part of the renovations twenty years ago for situations just like this, since it’s easier and safer than a ladder that spans three stories.

“Please don’t let them fall off the roof,” I mutter, and Josh laughs.

“They’re not going to fall. Relax, Kier.”

“My thoughts aren’t all that positive right now,” I tell him. “I can’t believe all the crap that’s happened in the past six days.”

“It’s been a wild week,” Skye agrees. “I don’t want to add to your stress, but where are you and Connor going to sleep tonight?”

“I’ve already thought about that.” Okay, it was my first thought when I walked in and saw the mess, and it’s the only positive to have come out of this: no more sharing a room with Connor. “He and Gabe can share, since they’re friends, and I’ll take the sectional in the Garden Suite.” Am I thrilled to be sleeping mere feet away from the gateway? Nope. But there aren’t a lot of options, and at least Gabe’s done his mojo thing. It’s safer now than it’s ever been.

“That should work,” Josh agrees. “Okay, let’s shove the beds as far to the sides as possible and find a tarp to lay under this drippy area.”

While they maneuver the beds, I go to the storage room next door to find a tarp. I know there are some there because they’re on the inventory list. We keep a bunch of heavy plastic tarps near the roof access in case the roof starts leaking.
